Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine officially opened the 23rd International Conference Safe Communities titled “Safe Communities are an Essential Need for a Modern Day Society” in Novi Sad. The conference will last until October 12.
The Safe Community initiative emphasizes the leading role of communities in the field of health and quality of life, injury and violence prevention and safe community building. The community should work on increased safety in a structured manner as no single approach is sufficient for changing existing behavioural patterns. Creative methods of education, physical planning and environmental change joined with appropriate regulations as well as enforcement are an important beginning for the safety of a community. Equal right for health and safety is the fundamental premise of WHO which officially launched the Safe Communities concept at the end of the 1980s.
“To share knowledge and experience with one another makes us become better people and influence the improvement of the society we live in. A safe community is a topic that should be discussed and more action should be taken in Serbia and in the rest of the world. People’s security does not have borders between countries. It either exists or does not exist. It does not differentiate the colour of the skin, the territory in which we live or religion. Security requires functioning of the system as a whole in order to ensure the quality of life for every individual on the planet. That is, to guarantee basic human rights”, said HRH Crown Princess Katherine.
The 23rd International Conference Safe Communities is organized under the auspices of the Government of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, chaired by Professor Mirjana Milankov, Safe Community Project Leader for Serbia, and hosted by National Center for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Novi Sad.
